This month we are featuring our distributor Hews Company located in South Portland, Maine
and Bow, New Hampshire. Hews describes itself as Northern New England’s largest truck
equipment supplier. John Harrington, Director of Operations, has been with the company
for over 2 years. “Hews Company is a distributor for a diverse product mix including truck
mounted cranes, service bodies, dump bodies, trash packers and car carriers on class 3 to
class 8 trucks. Our highest volume products are truck cranes and service bodies. The
customers for cranes are primarily building supply companies and concrete form companies.
Our largest customer is Southworth Milton, the local Cat dealer.”
The company has a strong vision of their customer’s needs, “Hews Company produces high
quality, high value and highly customized products. We strive to understand the customer’s
business needs with regard to delivering and servicing their products and translate those
needs into a finished truck.” John respects and values the leadership Hews provides.
“My two bosses are Bob and Charlie Hews.
They have been in the business for over 30 years and have plenty of industry, customer
and business experience.” Though leadership is very important at Hews, John also recognizes
that the shop technicians are of great value. “As a distributor we need quality equipment
and efficient techs. Fortunately, we have a good base of techs that have been with Hews for
many years. 50% have more than 20 years of experience with us.”
Rating the service and
product Hews receives from Omaha Standard, John states, “Omaha Standard is a great supplier
for Hews Company because of the breadth of product it supplies. This allows us to put
together full truckloads of product without inflating inventory of any one-product category.
This is critical to our success as freight can be the difference of a profitable sale or not.
The majority of our calls to Omaha Standard customer service are regarding warranty issues.
We find Mike Redding prompt and responsive to issues. We deal with him via both phone calls
and e-mail. E-mail has greatly helped us clearly convey any issues and get a quick resolution."
Hews is one of our strongest distributors and it’s a pleasure to do “whatever it takes” to
supply and service them.
