Engineering Department Implementing New Software
Engineering is beginning to implement SolidWorks software for designing truck bodies.
The new package creates a 3-D solid model of parts and/or assemblies, then derives
manufacturing drawings directly from that model, eliminating "translation" errors
common to the AutoCAD software we currently use. We have hired Parag Pathak, an engineer
with SolidWorks experience, to lead us in this project. The new software will be
implemented in stages over the next several months, generally one product group at a
time. We plan to be fully converted next Spring.

Paint Process Simulation
On July 18th and 19th, representatives from Metokote Corporation, Mason Walt,
Kevin Backus and Bob Wacker, visited Omaha Standard to participate in a paint
process simulation to help understand how product will flow through the plant.
The emphasis was from the end of the weld assembly lines, through the new paint
system and out through the post paint assembly processes. The simulation exercise
represented production volumes forecasted for a volume projected two years into the
future (2008). Using these volumes and a preliminary layout, the team was able to
see where the bottlenecks were. Metokote learned about capacities and will make some
adjustments. Omaha Standard learned about the importance of cycle times meeting customer
demand rates (takt times). There were many other action items that each company will
follow up on. It was a great exercise to see the impact now before we are in
production.
The Metokote team also had a chance to visit the new plant site to see the progress
made to this point. They will start installing their equipment in the near future.
There were several people involved in the simulation from Omaha Standard as well:
Randy Swalve, Pete Menke, Stan Campbell, Chris Knecht, Chris Langhorst, Eric Kluver,
Jim Moser, Max Smelser, Jeff Tilley, Kevin Larkowski and Kevin Kaufman. Thank you to
all who made this simulation a big success. This simulation will be played out again
for supervisors and others.

New Manufacturing Plant - Pictures Updated Weekly
Still Effectively on Schedule
The building is coming along nicely despite more rain in the last month. The roof is 85% covered, and will be completed next week. Concrete is also about 85% complete, with more pours scheduled for both this week and next. The north drive is complete, and the south drive and parking lot grading work for the concrete is taking place now. The gas lines are being run, and the air handling equipment on the roof is to be installed in the next month. Steel work is complete for the plant, and is proceeding in the office areas. Electrical, fire sprinkler, and HVAC work is proceeding inside the plant at a rapid pace. Plumbing is going forward both inside and outside, as the masons start working on the office spaces. The paint system components will start to be delivered this week, and installation will start very soon after. All in all, regardless of the weather, we are still effectively on schedule.

Get to Know the Distributor
Cliffside Body Corporation (Fairview, NJ)
This month we are featuring our distributor, Cliffside Body Corporation,
located in Fairview, New Jersey. Rob Greenwald, Vice President of Sales, has been
with the company for 18 years. “Our strength is diversification. We are always busy
because we are involved in a lot of special type truck bodies and equipment. We try to
be responsive to a customer’s concerns or problems during a project. Changes are part
of the territory when you’re building municipal and customized bodies.” Rob explains
that his company has an even split of municipal and retail customers, “We have a 50/50
split municipal/retail. Cliffside sells most of our equipment through dealers. We
consider dealers more as partners in the sale to the retail/municipal customer not as
a separate category.” Cliffside is a family business. “I became involved with
Cliffside because it is a family business, they would have broken my legs. This
is New Jersey you know…just kidding.” All joking aside, Rob is very proud of the
family influence in the business. “My father Ed is my mentor. I have a degree in
Electrical Engineering from Stevens Tech, but he taught me everything I know about
the truck body business and how to treat customers.”
Cliffside recognizes Omaha Standard’s strive for excellence. Rob states, “Omaha
Standard has always been a great partner with the type of work that we do, from specs
to drawings, to building and delivering a quality product. Whatever we require has
been done professionally. Mike Redding is our inside guy. He doesn’t always have
the answers we need instantly, but he never fails to get back to us with the correct
answer in a timely fashion. OS has a large staff of professionals who know truck
equipment and we consider all of you assets to delivering quality truck equipment.”
Cliffside Body Corporation is one of our greatest distributors and which we are
happy to service doing ‘whatever it takes’.
